Publisher Square Enix recently sold the series to Embracer Group as part of a $300 million deal, which left fans pretty upset. However, the studio only had until May of this year to get cameras rolling on a sequel, and that moment has obviously. Based on the hit video game series, Lara Croft was brought back to the big screen in 2018 with a reboot starring Alicia Vikanda. Several months ago, developer Crystal Dynamics announced that it is working on another Tomb Raider video game. The Wrap (via ) reveals that MGM has lost the right to the Tomb Raider franchise.
Where the movies go from here is anybody’s guess.

Despite some anticipation for the sequel, MGM recently scrapped Tomb Raider 2 and a new report reveals the reasons why the film was cut short. It had a lukewarm reception in North America, but did better internationally. Theres clearly success to be found, but clearly not with this current iteration of the franchise. MGM Studios produced the 2018 Tomb Raider movie. The two movies starring Angelina Jolie were similarly underwhelming, but made a combined total of 432 million. Instead, any future Tomb Raider film will be a complete reboot. 2018s Tomb Raider earned 275 million at the worldwide box office, but was met with so-so reviews. The film was released 17 years after Angelina Jolie played Lara Croft in 2001s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.Jolie starred in the 2003 sequel Lara Croft: Tomb Raider The Cradle of Life. Insiders also claim that Alicia Vikander, who played protagonist Lara Croft in the 2018 movie, will not be returning to the series. The 2018 Tomb Raider wasnt a big hit with critics, but it grossed 274 million internationally, making enough of a profit to spur sequel talks. For the time being, rights have returned to producer Graham King’s GK Films. As such, several high-profile movie studios are bidding to acquire the franchise, though no deals have closed yet.
